There are many reasons a child may be having problems in school. Whether this is a long term problem or you've noticed that your child's grades have gotten lower recently, there are a number of actions you can take. While it's normal to be concerned, you should realize that many children have academic problems at one time or another. Pay attention to how you talk to your child or children. One of the best ways to help a child improve academically is to make him or her feel smart. This may sound too simple, but experiments have been done that prove that children will do better in school when they're made to feel smarter, by teachers or their parents. You can encourage your kids by noticing anything they've done well, whether it has to do with school or something else. You may have heard of studies that show that listening to certain kinds of music can help the brain to work more efficiently. Some researchers go as far as to say that you can make yourself smarter by listening to, or playing the right kind of music. You may be able to help your kids using this concept, sometimes called the Mozart Effect. In general, classical music is used to help people concentrate better, and it may take some convincing to get kids to listen to this kind of music! However, you can encourage them by playing it in the house and having it on in the background wherever they're studying. To enhance this effect even more, you may want to sign them up for music lessons.
The way your child eats may be having an impact on his or her ability to focus on schoolwork. Many children today eat a diet that's high in sugar and other junk food. If they drink soda, this may also contain caffeine. Sugar, caffeine, starchy foods and possibly certain chemicals and additives can make children nervous and even hyperactive. They can also cause mood swings in sensitive children (and adults as well). These symptoms are obviously not ideal for learning, doing homework or sitting in class. You should, therefore, take a look at your children's diet, as this may be affecting their academic as well as physical well being. In summary, parents can use a variety of techniques to help their kids do better in school. Depending on what the problem is, and what kind of approach your kids respond best to, one or more of the above tactics may be helpful. As a parent, you have to be alert to any changes in your child's performance in school, for better or worse, so you can pinpoint what's causing it.
