Flu is transmitted before symptoms appear

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Research at Imperial College London examining influenza transmission in ferrets suggests that the virus can be passed on before the appearance of symptoms. If the finding applies to humans, it means that people pass on flu to others before they know they're infected, making it very difficult to contain epidemics.

The research was supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Imperial Biomedical Research Centre.

Knowing if people are infectious before they have symptoms is important to help authorities plan for an epidemic, but is has been difficult to establish this from data collected during outbreaks. Previous research using mathematical models estimated that most flu transmission occurs after the onset of symptoms, but some happens earlier.

The new study, published in the open access journal PLOS ONE, is the first to investigate this question experimentally in an animal model. Ferrets are commonly used in flu research because they are susceptible to the same virus strains and show similar symptoms to humans.

Ferrets with flu were put in contact with uninfected ferrets for short periods at different stages after infection. Transmission occurred before the first symptom, fever, appeared, both when the ferrets were in the same cage and when they were in adjacent cages.

Professor Wendy Barclay, the study's lead author from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, said: "This result has important implications for pandemic planning strategies. It means that the spread of flu is very difficult to control, even with self-diagnosis and measures such as temperature screens at airports. It also means that doctors and nurses who don't get the flu jab are putting their patients at risk because they might pass on an infection when they don't know they're infected."

The flu strain used in the study was from the 2009 swine flu pandemic, which killed almost 300,000 people worldwide.

The researchers found that ferrets were able to pass on flu to others just 24 hours after becoming infected themselves. The animals did not suffer from fever until 45 hours after infection and began sneezing after 48 hours. The results are consistent with earlier studies which found that sneezing is not necessary to transmit flu ? droplets of virus are expelled into the air during normal breathing.

In the late stages of infection, after five or six days, flu was transmitted much less frequently, suggesting that people can return to work or school soon after symptoms subside with little risk of passing flu on to others.

The first author, Dr Kim Roberts, who is now based at Trinity College Dublin, said: "Ferrets are the best model available for studying flu transmission, but we have to be cautious about interpreting the results in humans. We only used a small number of animals in the study, so we can't say what proportion of transmission happens before symptoms occur. It probably varies depending on the flu strain."

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL will open the regular season with replacement officials.

Replacements will be on the field beginning next Wednesday night when the Cowboys visit the Giants to open the season, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union,

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement went nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized.

Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, told the clubs in a memo that the replacements will work "as much of the regular season as necessary," adding that training with each crew will continue.

A request for comment from the NFLRA was not immediately answered.

Anderson said the sides remain apart on economic issues and other matters and called the gap considerable.

Building Relationships Online | Nary Ordinary Business Services

Our home is absolutely filled with gifts from my friend Kerry: tee-shirts, cookbooks out the wazoo, shopping totes, pretty bits of d?cor; recently, she sent me an adorably frilly apron, and sometime in the winter holiday season, she inevitably sends us a box of cookies and treats that literally puts the sugar on top of having a pastry chef for a friend.

Her home is much the same: photography by Rob, pottery by friends, random magnets and d?cor that just struck me as ever-so-Kerry.

Kerry and I have consoled one another through the lost of pets, friends and family over the course of our eight-year friendship. We have celebrated wedding anniversaries, new jobs and random accomplishments. When times call for it, we are in daily contact, and when life has settled into rote routines, we may go months with no contact at all.

For all of that, I wouldn?t recognize Kerry if she were standing right next to me. In these eight-plus years, we have never met in person and I have only seen one picture of her in which she was bundled in winter clothes and was little more than a dot shoveling snow in the back of the scene. We have never even spoken on the phone.

Kerry and I met on a Weight Watchers message board shortly after Rob and I got married. (Yeah, I know it?s traditional to lose weight before the wedding but if you think there?s much of a drop of traditional in me, we haven?t spent enough time communicating!) We started chatting because we both had chef hats as one of our three badges WW allows for personal expression, and quickly moved to email to avoid filling the boards with the chatter of our blossoming friendship.

Except for the fact that our relationship is entirely digital, it has followed the path of most friendships: the more we emailed, the more we discovered we have in common ? like both being married to computer guys 14 years our seniors and both having pets for kids ? and the fun that comes from our dissimilar traits ? like how Kerry and her hubby are such music nuts that in eight years I haven?t come across a single band they didn?t hear ages ago, often live and from right in front of the stage.

I was thinking about Kerry while reading the discussion in the comments on Ruth Cassell?s most recent guest post with us, Check yourself before you check your phone (again), in which the question of digital-only relationships are possible. I?m going to have to give that one a great big Yes Absolutely.

That adorable cat up there is Frankie, a long-time member of Kerry?s family who will live in our hearts forever, even if Rob and I never did get to scratch his ears before he passed.?

Single gene has major impact on gaits in horses and in mice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Researchers at Uppsala University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and their international collaborators have discovered a mutation in a single gene in horses that is critical for the ability to perform ambling gaits, for pacing and that has a major effect on performance in harness racing. Experiments on this gene in mice have led to fundamental new knowledge about the neural circuits that control leg movements. The study is a breakthrough for our understanding of spinal cord neuronal circuitry and its control of locomotion in vertebrates.

The study is being published August 29 in Nature.

Our ability to walk and run is dependent on a complex coordination of muscle contractions carried out by neuronal circuits in our spinal cord. But how does this work at the level of nerve cells and molecules? The researchers took advantage of the variability in the pattern of locomotion in horses. The three naturally occurring gaits in horses are, in order of increasing speed, walk, trot and canter/gallop. Some horses are able to perform ambling gaits and/or pace, for instance, Icelandic Horses can t?lt (an ambling gait) and perform flying pace. The researchers decided to investigate the genetic basis explaining why some Icelandic Horses can pace but others cannot.

"We suspected a strong genetic component, but were almost shocked when we discovered that a single gene, DMRT3, largely explained the genetic difference between pacers and non-pacers," explains Lisa Andersson one of the PhD students involved in the project.

Independently, Klas Kullander's research group had discovered that this particular gene, DMRT3, is expressed in a previously unknown type of neurons in the spinal cord of mice. The characteristics of these neurons, including their location, suggested that they could take part in neuronal circuits coordinating movements. When the two research groups, both associated with Science for Life Laboratory in Uppsala, compared their data, they realized that an important biological finding was imminent.

"At that moment, we realized that our discovery did not only extend our understanding of spinal neuronal circuits in mouse, but that we had discovered a tangible population of nerve cells that also seemed to be critical for the control of gaits in horses. The new type of nerve cell is dependent on DMRT3, and is tentatively named after this gene," tells Klas Kullander.

The researchers demonstrated that a single base change in DMRT3, which resulted in the production of a truncated form of the DMRT3 protein, was the mutation associated with pacing in horses. They developed a diagnostic test for the mutation and discovered that it is widespread among horses that show alternate gaits like Tennessee Walking Horse from the USA and Paso Fino from South America. Moreover, to their surprise, the mutation is very common in horses bred for harness racing.

"The DMRT3 mutation shows a strong positive association with performance in harness racing, states Leif Andersson who led the hunt for the DMRT3 mutation."

As a horse increases its speed it will normally switch from trot to gallop, which is the natural gait at high speed, but this leads to disqualification for trotters.

"Our interpretation is that the mutation inhibits the transition from trot to gallop and thereby allows the horse to trot at very high speed, explains Leif Andersson."

To further explore the function of DMRT3 the researchers took advantage of the sophisticated tools of mouse neurobiology. This revealed that the DMRT3-neurons cross the midline of the spinal cord and thus connect the left with the right side, and also have a direct connection with motor neurons that control flexor and extensor muscles. The researchers also found that knockout mice, which lack a functional DMRT3 gene, have an altered pattern of locomotion.

"Without DMRT3, the neural circuit that contributes to the coordination of the limbs is not formed in a normal way," states PhD student Martin Larhammar, who participated in the characterization of the DMRT3 gene in both horses and in mice.

"At birth, these neural circuits are in a chaotic state and the mouse cannot coordinate its leg movements, but eventually other neural circuits seems to compensate for the loss of DMRT3 so that the adult mouse can again move relatively normally. This flexibility is interesting because it shows that our nervous system can adapt despite the loss of a key gene," continues Klas Kullander.

The DMRT3-mutation has had a major impact on the evolution of the domestic horse and most likely first appeared thousands of years ago. Presumably, humans discovered that some horses had a pattern of locomotion that made them particularly useful for certain purposes, such as a smoother ride provided by horses performing an ambling gait.

"The discovery of the DMRT3 mutation is an outstanding example of how genetic studies of the evolution in domestic animals can lead to basic new knowledge concerning gene function and important biological mechanisms," states Leif Andersson.

"It is truly great when this type of interdisciplinary collaboration results in such ground breaking discoveries. There was no information in the scientific literature on the function of the DMRT3 prior to the publication of our article. This protein is present in all vertebrates for which data are available, and it is likely that DMRT3 nerve cells have a central role for coordinating movements in humans as well," ends Klas Kullander.

Holiday Success Interview #2: Brooks Bell | Business 2 Community

For the second interview in our Holiday Success series (here?s last week?s Q&A with the e-tailing group), we caught up with Brooks Bell?s Gregory Ng to gather his insider perspective on a few trends and tactics for the upcoming holiday season.

Q: What is one of the biggest ecommerce trends we?ll see this holiday season?
A: I believe that online retailers will leverage more flash sale techniques this holiday season. We?ve already seen Cyber Monday deals launching prior to Thanksgiving. I expect ?Holiday Shopping Flash Sales? to crop up even earlier this year. With the promise of exclusive products being offered earlier in the shopping season (and in limited quantities), these sales will surely be successful. But the real opportunity lies in how those email lists are used post flash sale. For example, if retailers message those that clicked through too late with a ?bonus second offer,? they could stimulate sales during down periods in the buying season.

Q: What is the most important thing an ecommerce business can do this season to improve conversions?
A: The most important thing to remember is the mindset of the online gift buyer. For many, the sheer amount of gifts to be purchased is a task that feels good to accomplish. Capitalizing on the psychology behind this process can lead to increased conversions and a larger average order value. For example: Most gift givers have a set budget they want to spend for each recipient. Make sure your products can be sorted by price point. This should extend way past a simple sort of products from lowest to highest price. Instead, curate the top-selling products within a price range (i.e., Gifts Under $100).

Q: How can ecommerce companies support consumers shopping across multiple devices?
A: Online retailers can start by giving customers and potential customers incentives to register on their sites. Registered users will not only get a more seamless experience?particularly when it comes to wish lists and populated shopping carts?but this will also help you track channel behavior down to the customer level.

Obviously the range of possibilities for multiple-device marketing greatly increases for brick-and-mortar retailers. The most exciting opportunity to me is the ability for customers to add to wish lists, registries, or online carts by scanning products with a mobile device or store kiosk.

Q: What is a good campaign to run during the holidays that many ecommerce companies still seem to overlook?
A: A campaign that is normally overlooked during the holidays is dialing up urgency by highlighting products that are in jeopardy of selling out. Typically, ecommerce engines have pre-determined inventory levels that trigger ?sell out? messaging. But if those settings are adjusted (especially during this high-volume time), it could convince more customers who are fearful of missing out to buy now instead of leaving items in their cart.

The series continues next week with another interview, so be sure to stop back for even more holiday hints.

Infusing, adding or transforming | From a global perspective

Paul Roberts offers a critique of the University?s Internationalisation Strategy in relation to learning and teaching.

York?s Internationalisation Strategy emphasises the economic and academic advantages of an internationalised higher education experience. These are two of the motivations for internationalisation proposed by Knight (1999) in her influential paper, the other two being political and social motivations. The economic aim of the strategy entails the development of ?programmes that prepare students to succeed in the modern global economy?, leading to better employment possibilities. The academic advantage is spelled out in the intention to ?create opportunities for international exchange with high quality institutions?. Mention is also made of the social imperative, the aim of bringing about ?improved cultural understanding between the University and key international partners?.

To achieve these aims, a set of objectives is outlined, grouped into three areas:

- academic endeavour and opportunity,

- reputation building, stakeholder engagement and income generation, and

- embedding internationalisation in the York community.

The first of these entails what Knight has called the ?Activity Approach? to internationalisation: the movement of students and staff across national and cultural boundaries. This is already in evidence, with large numbers of international students coming to York, internationally-recruited staff, and significant exodus of staff and students through overseas placement schemes and Study Abroad.

This first area includes a commitment to making the curriculum ?culturally diverse and internationally focused?. This seems closely aligned to Knight?s ?Process Approach? to internationalisation, where the curriculum is infused with international and intercultural elements.? The theme is taken up by Bond (2003) who cites Cogan?s (1996) list of starting points for infusing the curriculum with international content. As with the Activity Approach to internationalisation, there is much evidence of ?infusion?, or the Process Approach, already taking place at York.

The second area of objectives, while carrying implications for learning and teaching, does not make explicit reference to the curriculum, unlike the third area, ?embedding internationalisation in the York community? which entails bringing ?an international perspective to as many aspects of the student experience as possible?. This objective may be seen as an example of what Bond (op.cit) characterises as the ?Add-on? approach to internationalisation. The student experience is enhanced by the addition of an international perspective. As with examples of infusion, there are many instances of added international perspectives already in operation for York students, for example the King Lear project in Siberia.

These instances of activity, of infusion and addition, substantially multiplied, will undoubtedly lead in the right direction, towards a fulfilment of the ultimate economic, academic and social goals outlined in the strategy document. But more may be achieved by working towards a transformation of learning and teaching in both systems and practice.

The idea of making the curriculum culturally diverse and internationally focused seems based rather narrowly on the learning and teaching content expressed in programme and module documents, and to sidestep the opportunity to gain cross-cultural input into programmes by exploiting the presence of an international body of students. This focus on programme content may also result in a missed opportunity to use students to help develop intercultural competence. Experience at some HE institutions has shown that by transforming approaches to teaching room practice, it is possible to draw benefit from the diverse student body, allowing a range of cultural standpoints to inform programme content (e.g. Hockings et al 2009).? As a by-product of genuinely inclusive teaching strategies, students can develop intercultural competence (see Jones and Killick 2007, pages 112-3). Assessment schemes might then be transformed so that processes of intercultural communication are rewarded in the same way as content-based products.

Olympic cycling champion Philip Hindes has bike stolen

British cyclist Philip Hindes, who won gold at the London Olympics, has had his bike stolen during a burglary at his home, police said Wednesday.

Hindes, who topped the winner's podium in the men's team sprint at London 2012 alongside Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy, had used the red, white and blue Pinarello Paris bicycle for training.

Police said it was not the bike which the 20-year-old rode when he won his Olympic medal.

The bike was was taken along with Hindes' blue Volkswagen Golf in a raid on his home near Manchester, north-west England, at some point between August 23 and August 26.

Thieves smashed through patio doors and ransacked the house, which was unoccupied at the time of the burglary, while Hindes' car was later found burnt out by police.

Ryan: Romney won't 'duck tough issues' on economy

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Seizing the Republican National Convention spotlight, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan welcomed "the calling of my generation" to help lead the country in tough times Wednesday night and pledged that Mitt Romney will not duck the difficult decisions needed to repair the economy if he gains the White House this fall.

"After four years of getting the runaround, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney," the 42-year-old Wisconsin lawmaker declared in remarks prepared for delivery to the delegates. He spoke at a convention dogged by Tropical Storm Isaac, downgraded from a hurricane but still inflicting misery on millions along the nearby northern Gulf Coast.

"We will not duck the tough issues; we will lead," Ryan said.

In a secondary role if only for a moment, Romney accused Democratic President Barack Obama of backing "reckless defense cuts" amounting to $1 trillion. Addressing the American Legion in Indianapolis, he said, 'There are plenty of places to cut in a federal budget that now totals over $3 trillion. But defense is not one of them."

In Tampa, the Romney team scripted an economy-and-veterans-themed program and kept a wary eye on Isaac. The storm remained a threat to levees in the New Orleans area almost exactly seven years after the calamitous Hurricane Katrina.

Inside the convention hall, delegates cheered a parade of party leaders past, present and ? possibly ? future.

The presidents Bush, George H.W., elected in 1988, and his son, George W., winner in 2000 and 2004, were featured in an evocative video. Arizona Sen. John McCain, the party's 2008 nominee, spoke on his 76th birthday and said he wished he'd been there under different circumstances. And an array of ambitious younger elected officials preceded Ryan to the podium, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John Thune of South Dakota among them.

Ryan said in excerpts released in advance that he was accepting "the calling of my generation to give our children the America that was given to us."

He added, "The present administration has made its choices. And Mitt Romney and I have made ours: Before the math and the momentum overwhelm us all, we are going to solve this nation's economic problems.

"And I'm going to level with you: We don't have much time."

As he spoke a pair of electronic boards tallied the nation's growing national debt, approaching $16 trillion overall and more than $5 billion since the convention opened.

Ryan's vice presidential acceptance speech marked a prime-time national debut by a relatively young lawmaker lauded by fellow Republicans for his understanding of the complexities of the nation's budget.

Romney tapped Ryan this month as his running mate, a selection that cheered conservatives who have doubted the presidential candidate's own commitment to their cause.

If Ryan's selection was designed in part to appeal to conservatives, the convention was scripted to strengthen the ticket's appeals among women, Hispanics and others who prefer Obama over the Republicans, as well as veterans who supported McCain in 2008.

Romney delivers his own nationally televised acceptance speech Thursday night in the final act of his own convention. The political attention then shifts to the Democrats, who open their own convention on Tuesday to nominate Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for a second term.

Deep into a two-week stretch of national gatherings, the race for the White House is in a sort of political black hole where the day-to-day polls matter little if at all as voters sort through their impressions.

Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on television commercials by the candidates, their parties and supporting groups, the race has appeared unusually close since Romney clinched his nomination last spring.

Only eight or so battleground states appear to be competitive, although Republicans say they hope to expand the campaign after Labor Day, particularly in industrial states struggling to recover from the worst economic recession since the Great Depression.

As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan is the architect of a plan to curb long-term deficits by reducing taxes and making deep cuts in accounts ranging from farm programs to education. He also advocates saving billions from remaking Medicare and Medicaid, the government's health care programs for seniors and the poor.

The Medicare changes, in particular, are potentially incendiary in an election campaign. Democrats say that Romney, with his selection of Ryan, has accepted political ownership of a plan that would turn the program from one in which seniors' medical bills are automatically paid into one in which the government would give them checks to purchase coverage at costs that would require them to dip deeper into their pockets.

For all of the attack ads and inflammatory rhetoric, the two campaigns tiptoed carefully around the storm ravaging the Gulf Coast, vying to demonstrate concern for the victims without looking like they were seeking political gain.

Obama told an audience in Virginia he had spoken on the phone with governors and mayors of the affected states and cities while aboard Air Force One earlier in the day. Romney's aides let it be known he might visit the region once the storm had passed.

Romney's reference to $1 trillion in defense cuts was a 10-year figure that combined reductions already enacted by Congress and reductions scheduled to begin next January as a result of Congress' failure to reach agreement on a broad plan to cut deficits.

He did not say so in his speech, but most Republicans, including Ryan, voted for the first installment as well as the second.

And another convention speaker, Sen. Paul of Kentucky, pointedly disagreed with Romney on defense spending.

"Republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well-spent, and Democrats must admit that domestic welfare and entitlements must be reformed," he said.

Romney's reference to 9/11 was glancing in a speech that accused Obama of unwise defense cuts. Romney noted the economy is the top issue in the race, but he said, "Our debates can change suddenly, with a ringing phone in the dead of night ... or a plume of smoke on a clear blue morning.

"The first job of government is to keep the American people safe," he said, pledging to do so.

Democrats spent part of their time working to tarnish the Republican brand. They pointed to an ABC News report that said Romney's campaign had held a reception in Tampa Tuesday night aboard a yacht flying the flag of the Cayman Islands.

Romney has been criticized for having investments there by Democrats who say the effect is to reduce his taxes.

In an appearance before University of Virginia students, Obama said he understood Republicans didn't have much nice to say about his tenure in office. He told his listeners the GOP hoped to disparage him so much that they would either vote for Romney or sit out the election.

Romney had already returned to Florida aboard his chartered jet when Senate Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky began the convention's daily battering of Obama.

"America is suffering through an economic calamity of truly historic dimensions," he said in excerpts released in advance of his convention appearance.

"Some are calling it the slowest recovery in our nation's entire 236-year history. To call this a recovery is an insult to recoveries." He spoke a few hours after the government reported economic growth for the second quarter was 1.7 percent, sluggish but marginally better than earlier estimated.

Food Group Fiasco : BVWNews

August 29, 2012 ? Cheyenne Jones, reporter ?

With the new school year starting, BV West students return to eating the typical cafeteria food. Students prepare to numbly meander through the cafeteria selecting their favorite main course, sides, and drink. However, as we were sitting in class, most likely daydreaming, the announcements rudely stirred us out of our stupor and exclaimed the sudden change in our typical lunch routine. Different from previous years, we would now have to select three out of five of the food groups.

The new rule with the food groups only applies to those who buy a meal. A school lunch is only determined to be a meal if the main course falls under the category of what the school determines to be a ?healthy? food. This is ironic since everything the school serves is frozen processed food. In addition, the new rule about the food groups is ambiguous. Who can say that the tomato sauce drowning the whole grain pasta does not fall under the category of a vegetable? Not only is the new rule ambiguous it also ineffective too.

Although the school?s new lunch rule is aimed at creating a healthier BV West population, the rule only applies to those who purchase a school meal. So, if someone buys a pizza, which no longer falls under the category of a school meal, he or she is not required to fulfill the new food group rule. Thus, the new rule is ineffective. It creates enough hassle to elicit annoyance from the student population but leaves large enough loopholes for students escape the influence of the administration and continue their original ?unhealthy? meals.

Proponents for the change argue that with the rising obesity rate in the US a drastic revamp of school lunches is the answer. Although their intentions are not malicious it is not administrators? or the government?s right to interfere in students? lives in such a manner. ?It is the students? right to decide what food they consume. Besides, if students purchase the well-balanced meal at school with their three out of five food groups they could easily go home and fill up on cookies and an assortment of other junk food.

Ergo, if BV West truly wants to instill in the student body the importance of healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle more should be done to educate the students of the importance of being healthy. Although the importance of nutrition and exercise is emphasized in freshmen Gym and Health class sophomore year, when BV West students become juniors and seniors the importance of nutrition is no longer mentioned. Thus, if BV West wants to imprint in the students? minds the importance of being healthy classes should be taught during advisory about nutrition and exercise. This would be an improvement from being the typical social hour Advisory has become. Besides, once students are out of the protective cocoon of high school students will be faced with the unhealthy food choices and they will not have that lunch lady demanding that they go back and grab their serving of vegetables before they can check-out.

Brain Cancer Patients May Soon Have More Treatment Options ...

Brain Cancer Research in Seattle Leads to New Treatment Options for Patients

?

?

SEATTLE, Aug. 27, 2012 ?? Since its opening in 2008, the Ben & Catherine Ivy Center forhas led the expansion drive of major research projects and expanded treatment options for patients living with brain cancer in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the world. The Ivy Center was founded in 2008 to create a world-class treatment and research facility focused on delivering excellent patient care and advancing progress toward more effective treatments for brain cancer.

While great strides have been made in the treatment of breast, colon and other common cancers, only three new drugs to treat brain cancer have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the past 35 years, and these drugs prolong the lives of patients by only a few months. Such a center was needed at the time, said Greg Foltz, M.D., a neurosurgeon and director of the Ivy Center, because brain cancer had been for far too long a neglected or ?orphan? disease.

In fact, today the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most common form of malignant primary brain cancer, is only about 15 months ? only slightly better than it was a century ago, Dr. Foltz said. ?We felt we needed to focus our efforts on coming up with better treatment options,? said Dr. Foltz. ?We felt someone had to champion this cause so we embarked on a mission to get more researchers and physicians focused on this disease. And we did.?

Today, the Ivy Center at Swedish has partnered with and led major brain cancer programs with the Ben & Catherine Ivy Foundation, Institute for Systems Biology, Allen Institute for Brain Science, University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Accium Biosciences and The Elliott Foundation. This has led to a variety of new brain cancer treatment options and research programs for people living with brain cancer in our region. ?Previously, none of this existed,? said Dr. Foltz.

Five Years of Progress Made

The goal of the Ivy Center was to create a place where brain tumor patients and their families would have access to the best care and latest clinical research. The Ivy Center has achieved this making it possible for the center?s neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiologists and nursing staff to work in close collaboration with the program?s team of scientists. This collaboration allows clinicians and scientists to provide patients with the best of care as well as direct access to promising new therapies and clinical trials.

The Ivy Center?s clinical team provides comprehensive, integrated care that includes the latest neurosurgery techniques and technology, including intra-operative MRI-guided navigation, precision Gamma Knife radiosurgery as well as the support of a team of physical and occupational therapists, counselors, and other specialists who provide each patient with comprehensive, personalized care.

?People with brain cancer have needs that transcend the traditional requirements of most patients. Care is not just about an operation, it?s not just about a medication,? said Dr. Foltz. ?Brain cancer is a life-changing event, so it?s very important from the first meeting that these patients know that we?re there for them, that we care deeply about them and we?re going to provide all the resources that are possible to help them fight their disease.?

Holly Zimmerman, a Bellevue, Wash. resident who has been battling brain cancer and is leading a team in this year?s Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, can speak personally to the importance of the first meeting. ?A small seizure led doctors to the discovery of a tumor in my parietal lobe?what immediately followed was brain surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and a very scary prognosis for me and my family,? said Zimmerman. ?This disease is unique and it takes an extraordinary team of medical professionals to conquer it. As a one-year survivor of brain cancer, I have great hopes.?

New Strategies in the Search for a Brain Cancer Cure

Over the past five years the Ivy Center has established an international reputation for its expertise in the genetic analysis of individual tumors. At the Ivy Center, a genetic profile is created of every patient?s tumor with the goal to identify each tumor?s individual weaknesses and to develop new, personalized treatment strategies that target these weaknesses.

The Ivy Center?s genomic database ? now one of the largest brain tumor research projects in the country ? was developed in collaboration with the world-renowned Institute for Systems Biology. This collaboration brings together physicians and scientists in the fields of neurosurgery, neuropathology, systems biology, genomics and biostatistical analysis. Together they are determining how networks of genes and proteins interact in brain cancer to discover new targets for diagnostic tests and treatments.

In another partnership, the Ivy Center and the Allen Institute for Brain Science are creating a 3-D map of gene activity within brain tumors. These maps can then be compared with maps of gene activity in normal brain tissue to identify which genes are malfunctioning in the cancer tissue. Once these genes are identified the goal is to develop diagnostics and treatments that target these malfunctioning genes.

All data from these projects are being made available online to researchers around the world for free.

Clinical Trials for Brain Cancer Patients Brought to the Pacific Northwest

The Ivy Center?s expertise in the genetic analysis of brain tumors has led to its participation in a number of groundbreaking clinical trials:

Toca 511 Trial: The Ivy Center team is one of only eight sites in the country participating in the Toca trial. In this trial, a genetically engineered virus is used to insert a gene into glioblastoma cells. The gene produces a protein that activates a chemotherapy drug. Because the virus only inserts the gene into cancerous cells, the drug will only harm tumor cells. This approach allows high doses of the lethal drug to accumulate in the tumor cells, while sparing healthy cells nearby.
Temozolomide Trial: In this trial the Ivy Center team is leading a trial with the Seattle biotechnology company Accium Biosciences. In the study, researchers use Accium?s 15-ton particle accelerator to analyze tumor tissue to determine precisely just how much of the chemotherapy drug temozolomide reaches its target. This information will help determine which patients are most likely to benefit from the drug and which patients should try a different treatment. By using this new approach, it is hoped doctors will be able to better optimize brain cancer therapy so that they deliver the right drug to the right patient at the right dose.
DCVax Brain Cancer Vaccine Trial: In this groundbreaking study, a cancer vaccine is being used to train patients? immune systems to attack and kill their brain cancer cells. Once trained, it is hoped these immune cells will track down and destroy any brain cancer cells that remain after surgery and to be ready to fight off any new tumor cells should the cancer recur.
Building a Community for Care and a Cure

Finally, since its founding the Ivy Center has made community involvement a high priority. The center?s community outreach efforts range from involving as many patients as possible in research to develop new treatments, to building community support for patients and their families to help them cope with the disease, to enlisting the community in fundraising and education efforts.

The Ivy Center was established with a lead gift from Ben & Catherine Ivy, and $11 million in philanthropic funds have been raised in support of the Center thus far. As a nonprofit, the Ivy Center depends heavily on community support to fund new research initiatives and patient participation in clinical trials, which is often not covered by insurance.

?We are never going to find more effective treatments for brain cancer without the help of the community,? said Dr. Foltz.

A highlight of these efforts is the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, which has become a popular annual event that now draws thousands of participants and has raised more than $1.8 million for brain cancer research, care and advocacy.

Proceeds from Seattle?s Brain Cancer Walk have supported the Pacific Northwest region?s most promising brain cancer research projects as well as programs and services that benefit brain cancer patients, including clinical trials, advocacy programs, as well as comprehensive patient care and support services in the Pacific Northwest.

Over the past five years, the Ivy Center?s team of health providers and researchers has made real progress in understanding brain cancer and its treatment, said Dr. Foltz. ?I am very hopeful that in the near term ? we?re not talking decades ? but in the next three to five years that we will see new therapies that will significantly help these patients,? Dr. Foltz said.
