A couple of weeks ago, Thomas Bjorn was having what could be classified as a nice comeback season.
Early in the year, Bjorn won in Qatar. He contended at the Open Championship in July at Royal St. George?s ? site to his greatest professional heartbreak when he bunkered and re-bunkered himself to surrender the Claret Jug to unheralded Ben Curtis in 2003.
On Sunday, though, Bjorn wrapped up a 4-shot win at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland with a final round of 9-under 62. The Great Dane stood tall over German Martin Kaymer, who was European Tour player of the year in 2010.
For Bjorn, it?s his second consecutive win in as many weeks. He survived a 5-man, 5-hole playoff last weekend in Scotland to hoist the trophy at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
With three wins on the European Tour, he has tied world No. 1 Luke Donald for the most wins on the circuit this season. Thanks to the much deeper fields in the Englishman?s wins ? WGC Accenture Match Play, BMW PGA Championship and Barclays Scottish Open ? he holds a distinct and massive money lead over Bjorn, but it closed a little bit more as the Dane got to 7th on the Order of Merit.
Bjorn will also catapult in the Official World Golf Ranking. Having begun the year at 124th on the ladder and entering the week at 59th, Bjorn will find his wind inside the magical top-50 that will guarantee his entry into most events in 2012.
All in all, not a bad extended 40th birthday present for Bjorn to himself.
