Fun Facts On Antarctic Penguins

Even though Antarctica is deprived of flora, its surrounding seas are abounding with life. Apparently, Antarctic seas are bountiful enough to feed large colonies of four penguin species. Penguins are among the easiest creatures to spot in Antarctica and there are so many fun facts that you might want to know about them before taking that Antarctic cruise trip (also make sure to cheap an Antarctica cruise cost first too!). This way, you will know what to expect seeing from them.

The four penguin species that you can expect seeing in Antarctica are the Emperor, Chinstrap, Adelie, and Gentoo penguins. You can take great Antarctica photosof the penguins on a cruise.? Of these four penguin species, only the Emperor penguins fall under the wingless divers classification. Chinstrap, Adelie, and Gentoo penguins are all brush tailed penguins. Brush tailed penguins tend to be taller than wingless divers. But wingless divers tend to be more plump than brush tailed penguins and therefore appear bigger. Early in the Antarctic cruise season, you can expect to see penguins perform courting and subsequent mating rituals. Some penguins who are already done mating can be seen building nests. Gentoo, Adelie, and Chinstrap penguins build nests made out of rock and not the typical twigs that bird nests are usually made of. By the time that penguins lay their eggs, they put them in these nests and sit on them. You will miss this behavior if you only take a cheap Antarctica cruises because by that time, the chicks have already hatched. Make sure to double check with a good?Antarctica travel guide?first. ?In fact, they?re big enough to swim at that point. You won?t be seeing Emperor penguins build nests because this is not their behavior. They take care of their eggs by balancing one on top of their feet and hiding them beneath their abdomen. Emperor penguins only lay one egg. All other three penguin species found in Antarctica lay two eggs. Both partner penguins participate in caring for their eggs and chicks. This is not a common sight in the animal kingdom where females are often left alone to care for their young. On a last minute trip to Antarctica which is between February and March, expect to see the chicks take their first swim on the cold Antarctic sea.
