Howard University held a vigil Friday night for 22-year-old Omar Sykes, a student who was shot and killed near the school's campus in northwest D.C. on July 4.
Sykes was walking on Fairmont Street near the campus with another student late Thursday night, when they were approached by two men, who tried to rob them.
Sykes, a native of the District, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead when he arrived at a nearby hospital. His classmate was badly beaten, but survived.
Police Captain Robert Alder says they are hoping the public will help them identify the suspects. They are described vaguely as two African-American men in their 20s, and around 5 foot 10 in height. One suspect was wearing dark clothing, while second suspect was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.
Police are reviewing surveillance tape from local businesses and offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction.
