Some 70 percent of almost 200 respondents to the survey by data provider Rigzone believe the British government was right to offer incentives to communities where hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, and horizontal drilling will be used. Live.Laugh.L0ve.: Persnickety Prints Craft - Part 1

Hey friends. I hope your weekend was good and that your week has started off with a bang! One thing that is getting me through the waiting game about my back {besides my husband, kids & family of course} is crafting. For awhile now, I have been wanting to add more crafts to this little space of mine and I finally started taking the leap. I adore crafts and making over furniture and rooms and I miss doing that and sharing those things on the blog. So, you could consider today a little start to doing just that! A couple of weeks ago I ordered some Persnickety Prints. When I got them in the mail, I was SO happy with them and I really wanted to do something fun with them. I have two things in mind, this is part 1 of my persnickety prints crafts!
Live.Laugh.L0ve. // Persnickety Prints Craft - Part 1

I have seen pictures hung on walls in so many different ways and I really wanted to do something different. I have always liked different, it's just part of who I am and I just kept looking at them and looking at my house and my small amount of craft supplies and BAM it hit me. I wanted to "hang" them but, not in a traditional way. Insert this tutorial.

Live.Laugh.L0ve. // Persnickety Prints Craft - Part 1

You will need:

Your prints

A needle

String

Scissors

Tape

Live.Laugh.L0ve. // Persnickety Prints Craft - Part 1

Step 1 - Poke a hole in the top of your pictures in the center {or at least near the center}.

Live.Laugh.L0ve. // Persnickety Prints Craft - Part 1

Step 2. Stick a small piece of whatever string you want {I went with white} through the small hole and tie a double knot.

Step 3. Cut enough small pieces of a tape of all of your pictures & begin hanging them on your wall in whatever shape you wish. I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to do this V shape but, it worked out perfect. Hang them all up and wa-la. You now have pictures "hanging" on your wall. :)

I can't wait to show you what I am doing with the rest of my prints! :)?

p.s. the little heart you see in these pictures is covering up my ugly light switch that I have yet to put the cover back on yet! Ha, you can see the other uncovered one right around the corner, yikes! I should really do that shouldn't I? ;)

NFL head injuries averaging 16 days for recovery

An analysis of NFL injury data shows that players with concussions missed an average of 16 days last season, up from only four days in 2005.

The study by Edgeworth Economics, based on information collected by the league, shows that the average time out for other types of injuries has been more steady.

Severe injuries ? causing a player to miss at least eight days ? increased every season from 2009-12.

Jesse David, the economist overseeing the study, says Wednesday "you now have more severe injuries overall" because of the hike in reported concussions. He says longer absences for concussions could be because head injuries are more damaging or because players simply are being held out longer.

The NFL says it will look at the study.

Africa: Technology and Innovation Aim at Greater Food Security

Washington ? In the face of global climate change and currency devaluation, improved strategies are being used to combat high international poverty and malnutrition rates, and to increase global food security.

The administrator of the the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Dr. Rajiv Shah, this week announced two new innovation labs at Feed the Future, the U.S. government's global hunger and food security initiative.

"The U.S. has a proud history of providing food and services to the most in need countries," said Shah at a Feed the Future progress report on Capitol Hill Thursday. "It will continue to be our goal to modernise and strengthen these programmes, to create a pathway from receiving food when you are hungry to living in a food secure society."

One of the recently announced labs, the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Collaborative Research on Sorghum & Millet is a partnership between the organisation and Kansas State University.

The lab will attempt to find new technologies and techniques for smallholder farmers to use in order to ensure that their productivity of grasses raised for grain, including sorghum and millet, increases in times of climate change.

"The perspective from us is that we think the emphasis that has been given to agriculture is critical, not just for food security but for economic development and growth in developing countries overall," senior policy advisor on agriculture and food security at the advocacy organisation Oxfam International, Eric Munoz, told IPS.

"We certainly have questions about USAID's direction, but they are intended to strengthen their direction as opposed to redirect them."

The second of the two new labs, the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security, is a partnership with a number of universities including Michigan State University and the University of Pretoria. The lab will attempt to improve food security policies and increase private sector investments to support smallholder farmers.

"The food security policy innovation lab is intended to increase the body of knowledge and understanding of the best way to go about influencing policy and what the best ones are to accelerate the impact that we are trying to achieve," the food policy advisor for USAID's Food Security Bureau, David Atwood, told IPS.

Both of these labs will focus on Senegal, Niger and Ethiopia.

"If you look at the big food crises, some 17 million people were affected in 2012, including people in those three countries," Munoz told IPS. "They have large populations of food insecure and hungry people. Focusing on those countries makes a lot of sense."

A gender lens

Launched in 2011, Feed the Future issues annual reports analysing progress during the fiscal year. The reports outline overall goals for 2015 and yearly targets along the way.

"The programme is still just a couple years in so we are starting to see some nice results, especially on nutrition," Erin Jeffery, advocacy and policy coordinator for international development at the alliance of nongovernmental organisations InterAction, told IPS.

"But we would like to see them release more data and especially some more gendered data as they move forward."

According to the report, Feed the Future has met the majority of the goals it set for fiscal year 2012 in terms of who is receiving aid and how it is benefitting them. Leaders at the organisation say that they put more of an emphasis on providing food aid to women.

"Women tend to invest more in family and child education and health, so investing in women can really help take the whole development effort a long way," Atwood told IPS.

According to Feed the Future, women make up 45 percent of the agricultural labour force in developing countries, and if they were given the same access to land as men, their agricultural output could potentially reduce the number of hungry people in the world by 150 million.

In 2011, Feed the Future supported a group of 65 female farmers in Ghana for five months by training them in record keeping, planning and management. The group was eventually able to buy new technologies to increase their rice production.

"The progress report is not just about technology, it's an opportunity to understand where we can do better," said Shah at the talk on Capitol Hill. "We've gendered out data and learned that we have a great deal further to go to ensure that every dollar is preferentially benefitting women and girls."

By fiscal year 2013, Feed the Future hopes to see over 15 million rural households directly benefit from U.S. government intervention, over eight million people apply for technologies or management as a result of intervention, and over 13 million children under the age of five have access to U.S.-supported nutrition programmes.

"We want to ensure that when American assistance touches the lives of the hungry, we help them immediately and help them stand on their own two feet in the future," said Shah.

"When we lead with our values and we partner with our great academic and scientific institutions, our efforts are recognised an appreciated."

Strategy Analytics: Android Dominates the Tablet Market in 2013 Q2

July 29, 2013 --

BOSTON, July 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 51.7 million units in the second quarter of 2013. Android secured a robust 67 percent global share, while Apple iOS declined further to 28 percent. Windows also fell back but secured a 4.5 percent global share.

Strategy Analytics: Android Dominates the Tablet Market in 2013 Q2 with 67 Percent Share of Global Tablet Shipments.

Peter King, Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global Branded Tablet shipments reached 36.2 million units in Q2 2013, up 47 percent from 24.6 million in Q2 2012. The branded Tablet market had a rest period as very few new products came to market during the quarter. When we add in White-Box Tablets, shipments reached 51.7 million units, up 43 percent from 36.1 million in Q2 2012. Android is now making steady progress due to hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, Google and White-Box tablets which, despite the fact that branded OEMs are lowering price-points and putting pressure on the White-Box manufacturers, are still performing well," King added, "Apple iOS shipments were 14.6 million iPads in Q2 2013 which declined 14 percent annually. In the same quarter a year ago the first Retina display iPads were launched which could partly explain the decline as there were no new models in this quarter. However, to compensate that, iPad Mini which was not available a year ago, now freely available was expected to take the figure higher than 14.6 million."

Other findings from the research include:

  • Microsoft captured a niche 4.5 percent global tablet share in Q2 2013. There may be an uptick in Windows RT shipments in Q3 following savage price cuts by all the partners still involved in the RT Market. Microsoft has reduced prices by $150 and other vendors even more; they are still not cheap, but are much more where they should be to compete. The shortage of apps continues to be a problem, with seemingly little incentive for developers to work on the platform.

NBC to air Hillary Clinton miniseries - KansasCity.com

? A Hillary Rodham Clinton miniseries timed to precede the 2016 presidential election is part of NBC's effort to create "event" programming that will draw viewers to the shrinking world of broadcast network TV, NBC's programming chief said Saturday.

"We need to be in the event business. I think you're going to hear that from every broadcast network," said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman.

The four-hour miniseries "Hillary," starring Diane Lane as the former first lady and secretary of state, is one such bid for distinctive programming, he said.

The goal is to woo viewers who are increasingly drawn away by cable TV's eye-catching, critically acclaimed fare like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" and other media choices.

Broadcasting's audience is shrinking by 4 percent to 7 percent annually, Greenblatt told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

"Anything that can shake up the landscape and say, 'we have something special'" would be considered part of the varied group of event projects, he said.

At NBC, that ranges from the new fall game show "Million Second Quiz" to big-ticket scripted fare including "Hillary" and other projects announced Saturday: "Rosemary's Baby" a four-hour version of the Ira Levin novel that was adapted as a 1968 movie; an adaptation of "Stephen King's Tommyknockers," and "Plymouth," about the Pilgrim's journey and settlement in America.

A six-hour miniseries about Cleopatra is in development, Greenblatt said.

Although Clinton hasn't announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for president, Greenblatt spoke as if her candidacy is expected. "Hillary" could air before Clinton announces her decision, but the timing has yet to be determined, Greenblatt said.

He didn't address how such a miniseries, which will track Clinton's life and career from 1998 to the present, might affect the presidential contest.

The part of former President Bill Clinton has yet to be cast. Lane's credits include the feature films "Unfaithful" and "Under the Tuscan Sun" and the TV movie "Cinema Verite."

Other networks seeking to stem audience erosion are jumping on the event bandwagon, especially in light of the success of another King adaptation, CBS' summer series "Under the Dome." Announced plans include a Fox's remake of the "Shogun" miniseries based on James Clavell's novel.

Greenblatt argued that NBC, which finished the last September-to-May season in fourth place in total viewers, is in better shape when the entire year is taken into account, especially among advertiser-favored young adult viewers.

He credited the popular talent contests "The Voice" and "America's Got Talent," as well as dramas "Grimm" and "Hannibal."

NBC has high hopes for the fall sitcom that brings Michael J. Fox back to TV but is prepared for a big tune-in for the debut episode that might not be sustainable, Greenblatt said.
