DeNA, the social gaming company that now owns ngmoco, just launched a new, free, 8-bit retro role-playing game, D.O.T. Defender of Texel, to the iTunes App Store and the Google Play store.
Texel is a world made of dots, at the end of a wormhole, waiting for you to jump in and save the world. The battles are turn-based, and you choose who will fight each battle by swiping across a grid of characters to place your fighters on the battle field.
?D.O.T. features unique 8-bit retro graphics and provides an immersive gaming experience that includes questing, boss fights, player-versus-player matches, elite team building, and character evolution,? said Kenji Kobayashi, executive games director at DeNA.
The story here is that you?ve been transported to a world that is under attack from robotic invaders. This formerly peaceful world had no concept of war, or death, so it totally needs you. As in most free to play social games, you?ll need to play through stages, fight enemies, collect rewards and experience points, and level up. You?ll also be able to purchase these things with real money to minimize the grinding.
?With D.O.T., we applied everything we learned from our experience developing Blood Brothers and Ninja Royale and infused the game with new game mechanics and a special art design style,? said Kobayashi. ?This game hits the sweet spot between retro visuals and unexpected delights, and we?re pleased to offer consumers a new kind of high-fantasy mobile adventure game.?
It?s hard to tell what effect any lines chosen have on the type of defenders, and the free to play energy system can be frustrating at times, but D.O.T. Defender of Texel is good fun, easy to pick up and play during a quiet moment, and looks pretty fantastic. It offers a fun, casual RPG-style game that?s free to download and play on either Android or iOS. Give it a look and let us know what you think in the comments below.
