ANN ARBOR, Mich.Concussions and even lesser head impacts may speed up the brain's natural aging process by causing signaling pathways in the brain to break down more quickly than they would in someone who has never suffered a brain injury or concussion.

Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology and the U-M Health System looked at college students with and without a history of concussion and found changes in gait, balance and in the brain's electrical activity, specifically attention and impulse control, said Steven Broglio, assistant professor of kinesiology and director of the Neurotrauma Research Laboratory.

The declines were present in the brain injury group up to six years after injury, though the differences between the study groups were very subtle, and outwardly all of the participants looked and acted the same.

Broglio, who is also affiliated with Michigan NeuroSport, stressed that the studies lay out a hypothesis where concussions and head impacts accelerate the brain's natural aging process.

The study, "Cognitive decline and aging: The role of concussive and subconcussive impacts," appears in the July issue of journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews.

"The last thing we want is for people to panic. Just because you've had a concussion does not mean your brain will age more quickly or you'll get Alzheimer's," Broglio said. "We are only proposing how being hit in the head may lead to these other conditions, but we don't know how it all goes together just yet."

Broglio stressed that other factors, such as lifestyle choices, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical exercise, family history and whether or not you "exercise" your brain also impact the brain's aging process. Concussion may only be one small factor.

To begin to understand how concussions might impact brain activity and its signaling pathways, researchers asked the participants to perform certain tasks in front of a computer, and took images of their brains. The brains of the nonconcussed group showed a greater area of electrical activation than the participants with a history of brain injury.

The signaling pathways in our brains are analogous to a five-lane highway. On a new highway, traffic runs smoothly and quickly as all lanes are in top shape. However, during normal aging, the asphalt deteriorates and lanes might become bumpy or even unusable. Traffic slows.

Similarly, our brains start with all pathways clear to transfer electrical signals rapidly. As we age, the brain's pathways break down and can't transfer the information as quickly. Concussive and other impacts to the head may result in a 'pothole' on the brain's highway, causing varying degrees of damage and speeding the pathway's natural deterioration.

"What we don't know is if you had a single concussion in high school, does that mean you will get dementia at age 50?" Broglio said. "Clinically, we don't see that. What we think is it will be a dose response.

"So, if you played soccer and sustained some head impacts and maybe one concussion, then you may have a little risk. If you went on and played in college and took more head balls and sustained two more concussions, you're probably at a little bigger risk. Then if you play professionally for a few years, and take more hits to the head, you increase the risk even more. We believe it's a cumulative effect."

In the next phase of study, researchers will look at people in their 20s, 40s and 60s who did and did not sustain concussions during high school sports. They hope to learn if there is an increasing effect of concussion as the study subjects age. If interested in participating in the study, email neurotraumalab.umich@gmail.com.

Prepaid Credit Cards May Leave Consumers Exposed to Fraud ...

Prepaid credit cards are popular option among consumers who want the convenience of paying with plastic without the risk of overspending or accruing debt.

But prepaid credit card users may not be as protected as they think, says the Federal Trade Commission. These cards, also known as general purpose reloadable (GPR) cards carry hidden risks of which many consumers are unaware.

The FTC offered advice on GPR cards when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a notice for public comment on the issue. The FTC?s comment focused on GPR problems regarding the cards liability limits for fraud, disclosure of fees and expiration dates, error resolution and recurrent payments.

As GPR cards gain favor especially among students and those of limited financial means, the FTC has seen an increase in consumer complaints. GPR cards do not have the same protection features that traditional debit and credit cards feature including:

  • GPR users are often left vulnerable to fraudulent or unauthorized use of their cards, so if their identity or card is stolen, they may not recoup expenses from illegal purchases.
  • GPR cards often carry hidden fees and exceptions including monthly charges, cash advance charges, expiration dates after which the value and balance of the card could be lost.
  • GPR card frequently lack error/dispute-resolution provisions, so if a merchant overcharges or runs the card more than once, resolving those problems becomes more difficult.
  • GPR cards have no legal protection against unauthorized recurring charges.

Surviving a Friendship Break-Up 3: Letting Go or Holding On ...

There are two extreme responses I see women consistently make when it comes to responding to the Drift in our relationships.

In our Friendship Drifts? we get to choose which way the water flows?.

One is to hang onto every friendship ?no matter what.? They feel guilty if they don?t make them all work, hitting their heads against the wall of unhealthy relationships, or connections that are no longer meaningful.

The other extreme is to always make new and current friends that reflect only who you are right now, letting go of people from the last city, the last job, and the last relationship.

Regardless of which path tends to be your default: we are called to learn how to do both.

The Gift in the Drift

Unlike a Rift where we feel that some painful grievance occurred that demands a decision about whether our mutual acts of forgiveness also means a willingness to stay engaged in improving our friendship, a Drift doesn?t require a big obvious yes or no decision.? The gift to us in a Drift is that it doesn?t have to be all-or-nothing.

When we see the spectrum of relationships displayed in our Circles of Connectedness, we can see immediately in our relationships that there is a movement, a pipeline, a progression of consistent time and shared vulnerability among our friendships.? And just as we can move friendly people from the Left-side into friends that matter on our Right-side, so can we move people the other direction, too.

Friendships can increase or decrease through these Circles.

I?ve had friends who I would have, at one point, placed in Right-Side of my closest girlfriends.? But life changes?that impacted our dynamic, our time together, the presence we showed up with, and the needs we had?soon alerted me that we were possibly experiencing a Drift.

Reversing the Drift: In one of those cases, I knew instantly that I didn?t want to lose the friendship we had invested in just because she seemed consumed with different things in life now than I did.? So while our friendship may have become less consistent for a few months (moving back toward the Left on the Circles of Connectedness), when I saw what was at risk, I was able to write an email saying, ?I miss you!? Our friendship matters to me.? I know we?re both going through such different life phases right now, but that doesn?t diminish how much I love you and want to be a good friend to you. What do you need from me right now in this phase of life?? How can I support you??? In that note I was able to 1) call our attention to the possible drift 2) state how much she means to me and 3) ask what she needed from me. It prevented our Drift from being permanent and we landed back in the Committed Circle.

Letting the Drift: In another case, as much as I adored my friend, I had this quiet peace about our friendship having served its purpose.? Our time together had been less vulnerable and less consistent?ultimately making it less meaningful.? And I had several other really amazing friends in my life so I wouldn?t be left with a sense of alone-ness. I was at peace with letting that friendship Drift.? But even here, it isn?t an all-or-nothing invitation.? I can whisper a little prayer for her, ?Keep her safe, surround her with friends, lead her to joy,? and look forward to still seeing her when I see her.? It?s not ending something, but letting it become something different.? She moved from my Right-Side to my Left-Side? still someone I will meet for coffee every couple of months and cheer for when I see her or hear about her.

How To Know Which Way To Go?

We often feel that Drifts ?just happen? to us, like we?re a victim to changing circumstances.? While I do think that often it takes our consciousness some time to see what we?ve already been doing, feeling, and responding to subconsciously, it?s really important to realize that we have a voice in the process.? Taking a victim mentality increases our chances of blaming the other and feeling defensive? two reactions that never lead to peace.

So that we don?t go through live reacting from the two extremes? hang on to every friend with a tight fist no matter how little joy we still share OR to let go of everyone because life changes and they?re no longer just like us?we have to consider each friendship separately.

There are no hard-and-fast rules.? Here are questions I ask first:

  1. To the best of my knowledge, what provoked this possible Drift? Is this a permanent change or temporary?
  2. Why do I think I started pulling away?? Was it from listening to my inner wisdom or was it from my wounded ego voice? Did I get my feelings hurt or did I just sense a peace with not being as close?? Am I reacting to something else here? am I possibly jealous? Am I judgmental? Am I scared?? Is this really about her or is there information here for me about my life?
  3. Is this someone who I deep down still want to be good friends with even if I can?t see whether we can make something new or whether it would yet be meaningful? Is she someone I can enjoy? What side of me does she bring out? How has she fed me in the past?
  4. Is one of us in pain or crisis? possibly calling me to a less meaningful season of our friendship, but not necessarily giving me an exit strategy yet?
  5. Is this a situation where if we were to talk about it (no matter how awkward!) that there is the chance for an enhanced relationship?? Are there scenarios I can at least imagine where we might not only keep enjoying our friendship, but actually improve it?
  6. Do I tend to leave too easily?? If so, what scares me in this situation?? What is getting triggered in me? Am I projecting my feelings on her?
  7. Do I tend to stay too long? If so, what am I hoping will happen? What does us staying connected represent to me? If we let go of this, what am I scared of?
  8. Do I have other friendships in place or am I at risk of letting go of something, that while not ideal, is still supporting my life? Would I be better served investing more vulnerability and commitment here where we have a foundation?
  9. If I give permission to let this relationship Drift? what am I still willing to do to show up in her life occasionally?? How can I make sure I?m not choosing all-or-nothing?? How can I love her best as we move forward?

Maybe it will help you journal out your answers?? Even if you think you already know what answer you want to hear? sometimes the best information for our personal growth comes from going through the process rather than simply jumping to the conclusion we want.

I have found that after processing some of the above questions, I then just need to get quiet and check in with my own inner voice.? In those moments there is usually a clarity.

And if there isn?t? if you feel like you don?t know which way to go? I vote our default should always be to improve the current relationship we have.

Business Networking: Stop Working the Room - JAMAXX Web Design

by: George Torok

?

Have you approached a business networking event as another ?Room to Work?? What a mistake that could be.

Some networking experts might tell you to attend networking events and be prepared to ?work the room?. Stop and think about that advice. Is that what you want to do? Is that the first impression that you want to imprint on contacts in your network? That they were just ?worked? by you? How would you feel when you have been ?worked??

Stop doing that. It can feel slimy to you and the people who you ?worked?. And more importantly it doesn?t help build your business network.

It?s not that those misguided networking experts mean ill for you. Perhaps they are telling you what they did. Maybe they ignored or got used to that slimy feeling. That?s what often happens when one doesn?t know better or stop to think about what they are doing. They just rationalize it with mantras like, ?no pain, no gain?. Sometimes slimy people are not bad ? they just stop thinking or caring about how they appear to others. How can that be a good way to build a long term relationship?

Relationships

Networking is not about working the room or working people. Networking is about building relationships that are mutually productive over the long term.

Consider these four principles of good networking:

- Networks are built on trust

- Networking is built on relationships

- Networking is built by connecting with people

- Networking is about people ? not rooms. And people don?t like to be worked

?

Work the Room

You might as well just enter the room ? shout your name for all to hear then throw your business cards into the air ? and then leave with a flourish. You worked the room and let everyone know how little you thought of them. And you did nothing to build a strong network.

Sometimes the event organizers themselves are guilty of forcing you to work the room. They want to sell more events so they bully you to play their networking game. They announce their game: In the next five minutes give your business card to as many people as you can. What a stupid game. If you wanted to do that you would have been better to place an ad in the newspaper or throw your cards in the air.

Real networking is more about quality then it is about quantity. Networking is not about giving out your business cards to everyone in the room. Networking is not even about collecting everyone?s business card. Yes, you should distribute and collect business cards, but real networking goes deeper than that.

Make a Better Business Connection

Sustainable networking starts with making a connection and finding some common ground. Then you work at building a relationship that can last years and build profitable opportunities for both of you. Don?t focus on the event and don?t work the room. Instead, treat the room as a setting. Make some connections and build your network by working the relationships.

The next time some ?networking expert? tells you to work the room ? tell them. ?Don?t slime me. I didn?t come here for the room. I want to connect with people.?

Stop working the room. Instead, start building more profitable business networks by building real relationships.

Germany lead as Zara enjoys anniversary boost

Germany closed in on Olympic three-day eventing gold after an enthralling cross-country Monday while Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, marked her wedding anniversary in style.

Germany's Ingrid Klimke, lying joint fourth after the opening dressage, was tied for first for the individual gold on 39.30 points with Swedish rider Ostholt Algottson.

With two of Klimke's compatriots inside the top ten Germany were also out in front in the team competition ahead of the concluding leg in the jumping ring on Tuesday.

The defending team champions ended a drama-filled day on 124.70 points, with Great Britain next best on 130.20, and the Swedes (131.40) in the bronze medal position.

The last time Britain picked up a team gold was back in Munich in 1972 with Capt Mark Phillips in the mix and his daughter, Zara, was one of the stars for the home side on Monday.

"I am so pleased. It was hard work but a great feeling. The crowd was unbelievable and the best thing is that it is my wedding anniversary today," said the wife of former England rugby captain Mike Tindall.

Her family was out in force, with Prince William, his wife Catherine, his brother Prince Harry and Camilla, the wife of Prince Charles, among the 50,000 crowd lapping up the helter-skelter action from Greenwich Park.

After a foot perfect round on former racehorse High Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter punched the air in delight, gleefully acknowledging the cheers of the partisan onlookers on this her first Olympic Games.

"They were so loud, you couldn't hear your stopwatch beeping," the 2006 world champion said, before complimenting High Kingdom.

"He was so honest. Awesome. It was hard work but you just have to get on with it. He's a very suitable horse but lost a front shoe so it was even harder for him but he stepped up to the plate."

Klimke, a member of Germany's title-winning team in Hong Kong, venue for the equestrian events at the 2008 Beijing Games, praised her horse, Butts Abraxxas.

"I knew the course was really challenging and I am so thrilled with my very wonderful horse.

"He made it easy for me. Four years ago in Hong Kong he did the same and I am very privileged to have him."

Veteran New Zealander Mark Todd, setting out last of the 74 competitors, put himself in with a shout of a third Olympic gold when posting a speedy clear round on Campino to retain third in the individual event on 39.50 points.

The London 2012 cross country circuit featured an eclectic and colourful collection of 28 fences designed in the shape of planets and moons, flower gardens and sundials, the Tower of London, and the final "Olympic Horses" sculptured out of horse shoes.

With the competition sited on the home of the Prime Meridian timing was all important with riders allowed precisely 10min 3sec to complete the 5728m long test.

A clutch of competitors - 15 in total - failed to cross the finish line, among them Yoshiaki Oiwa, Japan's surprise leader after the dressage.

The 36-year-old, riding Noonday de Conde, popped over the first 19 obstacles only to come to grief at the tricky 20th.

His compatriot, intrepid Buddhist monk Kenki Sato, also fell.

Canadian Hawley Bennett-Awad, who came acropper at the third fence - the Bandstand Rails - was taken to hospital for x-rays, with organisers reporting her injuries were not serious.

Propping up the individual standings was Jamaica's lone equestrian rider Samantha Albert riding Carraig Dubh.

Describing her experience she said: "My horse pulled a shoe off at fence three and it was like riding on an ice rink.

"We were held on the course and he behaved like a man possessed. He thought he was ready to race at Cheltenham."

On Tuesday, team gold is calculated by a country's best three riders' combined scores after the final jumping session, with the top 25 riders jumping again to determine the individual honours.

Mayor Bloomberg's infant formula plan aimed at promoting breast-feeding in NYC hospitals

michael bloomberg

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on CBS This Morning on June 13, 2012

(Credit: CBS)

(CBS/AP) First he took on big servings of soda. Next on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's agenda is infant formula.

Going into effect on September 3, New York City's mayor will implement his voluntary Latch On NYC initiative in which infant formula will be kept locked away at hospitals to encourage breast-feeding for new mothers.

Report: Massachusetts birth hospitals ditch free infant formula gift bags
Breast-Feeding State by State: Who's #1?

Under the new program, reported by the New York Post, mothers who insist on bottle-feeding will still be able to do so, but nurses would have to sign out the baby formula, which would always be on hand for mothers who have difficulty breast-feeding.

The Post reports that 27 of the city's 40 hospitals have also agreed to eliminate gift bag giveaways of infant formula and other free items like lanyards or mugs with formula-company logos.

The mayor has gotten criticized over the new policy, which is set to take effect in September. While some are chiding the mayor for imposing a "nanny state," The National Alliance for Breast-feeding Advocacy says it's a good program.

The Alliance's executive director says keeping baby formula under lock and key, like medicines are kept, helps prevent hospital staffers from reaching for a bottle first, instead of encouraging new mothers to nurse their babies.

The program is voluntary for hospitals, and is part of a nationwide effort to improve newborns' health by promoting breast-feeding for babies.

Some city hospitals are already taking part in the program. At NYU Langone Medical Center, breast-feeding rates have surged from 39 percent of new moms to 68 percent since the program was implemented, the Post reported.

Earlier this month, Massachusetts health officials announced they would eliminate free giveaways of infant formula at the state's 49 hospitals beginning at the end of July to promote breast-feeding.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that moms exclusively breast-feed for the first six months of a newborn's life to boost protection against many illnesses and allergies.

Babies who are fed formula and stop breast-feeding early may be more at risk for diabetes, respiratory and ear infections and are more likely to require doctor visits, prescriptions or hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children who aren't breast-fed are also more likely to be obese and are at a higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

The CDC says in the U.S., most babies start breast-feeding, but within the first week, half have already been given formula, and by 9 months, only 31% of babies are breast-feeding at all.

The CDC has more on breast-feeding.

Romantic crooner Tony Martin dies at 98

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Crooner Tony Martin, whose career spanned from the Great Depression to the 21st century, has died in Los Angeles at 98.

Friend and accountant Beverly Scott says Martin died Friday of natural causes at his West Los Angeles home.

A romantic idol for at least one generation, his hit recordings include "I Get Ideas," ''To Each His Own," ''Begin the Beguine" and "There's No Tomorrow."

Although he never became a full-fledged movie star, Martin was featured in 25 films, most of them made during the heyday of the Hollywood musicals. A husky 6 feet tall and dashingly handsome, he was often cast as the lead.

Off-screen, he married two movie musical superstars, Alice Faye and Cyd Charisse. The latter union lasted 60 years, until Charisse's death in 2008.

Easing Mobility Challenges With Age In Place Remodelin | Elder ...

?Easing Mobility Challenges With Age In Place RemodelingPosted on July 30, 2012 by Elder Care Pittsburgh in Alzheimers Care, Blog, Home Remodeling, homes, Independent Living, Mobility / Wheelchair

By:?Kevin Germain

As expected the trend for seniors continuing to live in their own homes as they age is on the rise. Seniors are not willing to sacrifice their independent living so easily these days. The option of managed care, assisted living and moving in with adult children is not appealing to the aging generation in 2012. With all of the available options within the home improvement industry to help create safe, barrier free living environments who can blame them.

Many adult children are also seeing the benefits of allowing their aging parents to remain within their own homes. Fostering independence keeps seniors active, mobile and excited about living life, things that often become stagnate when venturing into a care facility. It also allows a more manageable approach to caring for aging parents. It does not become a burden to any one sibling and their family.

Age in place remodeling starts with small tweaks that can be made as rooms are naturally remodeled in the course of home remodeling. This makes the transition into barrier free living simpler. Simple steps such as updating faucet handles as well as door pulls and levers can make accessing rooms and cupboards easy for aging hands. Plus this type of renovation is non-invasive and really can be done slowly as home updates are being made.

It is really beneficial for homeowners of all ages to start incorporating universal designs into their home improvements, creating a unique stylish home that is safe and comfortable for years to come. Below are some items to consider when planning home renovations.

One issue to consider is the width of doorways and the homes hallways. In new construction you will often see hallways that are substantially wider than homes built earlier. This helps to give homes a more open feel. Wider hallways keep the home from feeling tight and closed in. Another benefit for barrier free living is that mobility devices such as walkers, wheelchairs and canes are able to be used without worry. The same is true with doorways that are widened. It allows for easy turns to be made in and out of rooms.

Ramps are another update being made to homes today. I know you instantly imagine hospital ramps when I say that but today ramps are incredibly stylish and versatile. Not at all like the aluminum hospital style ramps, ramps today are made of a variety of materials including aluminum, wood and mixed metals. Stairs can also be designed along side of handicap ramp systems as not to hinder those wanting the use of stairs as well. It is best to make the actual step a bit wider and about seven inches high for ease of use and safety.

The bathroom is one of the most important areas of the home for privacy and independence. Special care should be sought out when designing the space. Consider adding a shower that does not involve stepping in. Barrier free surrounds are available or for a more sophisticated approach you can use textured tiles to surround the shower areas, add a built in bench and soap dishes left at a lower height.

Another issue in the bathroom area is often the actual toilet itself. It is best to replace the toilet with a toilet that is taller than an average commode. This is a great way not to single out the user. Many aides for the bathroom are invasive and really public as they are used over the actual toilet. This is often embarrassing for the user. Higher toilets with added grab bars give a more attractive, less institutional feel to a bathroom area.

There are many stylish updates to the home that you can make to improve your home to help create an independent, barrier free living environment. As your parents start to age and you see them remodeling hint to them that some of the above can be put into place keeping the home stylish yet upgrading the safety for them. Seniors and those losing their mobility will benefit from the unsterile look and feel of their home.

Low Income Auto Loans ? Is It Possible To Get A Car Loan With Low ...

Modern technology has gifted man one of his greatest passion ? cars. Ever since the invention of steam engine vehicles in 1769, cars have been popular. Everyone is just floored by the beauty of a car.

Sadly, buying a car has become difficult. All thanks to high purchase prices of these beauties. Most new cars start from $20,000 and a good used car is also expensive. Also, the gas prices are increasing which makes car buying very hard.

The economy is reviving and people have just started getting their jobs back. Finding a high income job is still a challenge. This creates a very bad situation because a car is needed to reach your work place but you cannot afford it with your job. Lenders have understood this situation quite well and that is why auto loans for low income borrowers have been introduced.

Most lenders require you to earn at least $1,500 per month. But, you can avail these loans even if your income is as less as $1,000. Now, don?t worry if you earn less than it because there are many other factors which decide your approval. Know them so that you can tackle them well.

1. Credit Score ? Higher the score, better it is.

2. Credit Profile ? Here the requirement is that it should be longer.

3. Term of Loan ? You should try and keep it short.

4. Loan to Value Ratio ? 70% -80% is optimum.

5. Down Payment ? 10%- 20% would improve your chances.

6. Employment Term ? At least six months.

7. Time at Residence ? You need to be living at the same residence for at least six months.

8. Co-signer ? Having a co-signer reduces lender?s risk.

When you have a low income, you must be better at these aspects. Now, it is quite possible that you have a bad credit score and earn less. For such a situation, get a larger down payment and search for a co-signer.

Now, as you have low income, it is essential that you don?t go for a very expensive car. If you go for an expensive car, its payments would also be huge. To avoid them, you will have to go for an unnecessarily longer loan term. This will increase the chances of an upside down loan. Hence, a used car is your answer. Once you improve on your income, you can always buy your dream car. Right now, it is important to get you a car that works for you. When you go for a pre-owned car, don?t forget to read the Vehicle History Report. It?s always good to know what you are getting into. Also, get the Odometer Disclosure Report because few lenders do ask for it.

Applying for Low Income Auto Loans is simple because you don?t need any additional documents. The only important thing is to prove your income. For that, you can use your recent pay stubs. If you are self-employed, it is important that you provide your IT details to the lender.

Low income auto loans are easy to get and a boon to those who are struggling with low income. So, don?t wait anymore. Cars are a necessity and it?s time to fulfill your car needs.

Ezautofinance.net is a leading auto financing company that serves the entire nation. We understand that low income is the cause of several unfulfilled car dreams and so, offer low income auto loans. Avail them and get ready to ride comfortably in your car.

UK Forum will create a technology blueprint for the 50-billion ...

by admin | 30 July 2012 | Geen categorie

ARM has invited some of the UK?s leading specialist technology companies ? EnLight , Neul, Alertme and AquaMW ? to establish the UK?s first industry forum to help shape the Internet of Things.

The forum aims to combat what they describe as the ?Internet of Silos? ? an unconnected world with less value to both consumers and businesses. The forum will drive a blueprint for how technologies associated with the Internet of Things should and could work together to support the 50-billion intelligent devices due to be connected to the Internet by 2020.

This coincides with ARM CEO Warren East speaking on the importance of mobile technologies and the UK?s role in developing this market at the British Government?s Business Olympics event in London from 26th July to 3rd August. The event is timed to showcase the UK contribution to international business during the Olympics, when the world spotlight is on the UK.

In 2020 everything that can benefit from an Internet connection will have one. In a similar way to people increasingly being online, every object will have a connection. This has huge potential to help use energy and natural resources more efficiently, manage our cities, monitor health more effectively and to improve lives.? The Internet of Things represents a big opportunity to drive growth for both UK and worldwide economies. According to IMS Research*, governments will play a key role in defining the regulations that will propel shipments for M2M communications modules to more than 118 million units by 2016, especially in the automotive sector.

The forum?s founding members are all involved in advanced technology and solutions associated with the Internet of Things, including commercial infrastructure monitoring, energy-saving street lighting, home automation, energy monitoring and low power radio technology for sensors. Their aim is to work together to develop public policies and standards designed to create the right framework to help governments and others ensure that the Internet of Things works properly, across the globe, and enjoys the confidence of consumers and businesses.? The first forum will meet 24th August in the UK and will be chaired by the Gary Atkinson, who leads the Internet of Things initiative at ARM.

A new analysis has found that doing away with PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing for prostate cancer would likely cause three times as many men to develop advanced disease that has spread to other parts of the body before being diagnosed. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that PSA testing and early detection may prevent approximately 17,000 men each year from having such advanced prostate cancer at diagnosis.

PSA testing has come under fire recently as a potentially ineffective screen for prostate cancer. Last year a government panel reviewed the available evidence and concluded that PSA testing has little or no benefit and that doctors are finding and treating non-aggressive cancers that are not likely to cause symptoms or be lethal. Therefore, many men may be experiencing serious treatment side effects such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction for no reason.

To see what might happen if PSA testing were abandoned, Edward Messing, MD, of the University of Rochester Medical Center, and his team looked at information from the years immediately before routine PSA testing was done (1983-1985) and compared it to the current era of widespread PSA testing (2006 to 2008). The information for the analysis came from the nation's largest cancer registry, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The researchers were particularly interested in the records of patients who had advanced prostate cancer that had already spread to other parts of the body at the time of diagnosis. These cases are generally incurable and always cause significant symptoms very quickly if left untreated.

The investigators found that approximately 8,000 cases of prostate cancer had already spread to distant sites (i.e. metastases) at the time of diagnosis in the United States in 2008 (the most recent SEER year). Next, they designed a mathematical model that used pre-PSA incidence rates of metastatic disease from the mid-1980s to estimate the number of such advanced cases that would be expected to occur in 2008 if PSA screening had not been done. They predicted the number would be approximately 25,000, which is about three times greater than the number actually observed.

"Our findings are very important in light of the recent controversy over PSA testing," said Dr. Messing. "Although there are trade-offs associated with the PSA test and many factors influence the disease outcome, our data clearly indicate that not doing the PSA test will result in many more men presenting with far advanced prostate cancer. Almost all men with clinically apparent metastases at initial diagnosis will die from prostate cancer," he added.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the male population. In 2012 an estimated 241,740 new cases will be diagnosed and 28,000 deaths will occur. Prognosis depends on whether the cancer has spread, and the degree to which the cancer cells are abnormal.
