Pee-wee Herman was a beloved, if eccentric and odd, character Paul Reubens played for many years, and his "Pee-wee's Playhouse" series and "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "Big Top Pee-wee" feature films spawned a small, devoted group of followers who to this day still feel loyal to the pinched-voice man-boy.

So much so that when Will Russell decided to throw a "Pee-Wee Over Louisville" day to honor the character and comedian the Facebook page announcing the event quickly drew over 4,000 fans.

The fans are now undoubtedly disappointed. According to the Louisville (Kentucky) Courier-Journal, Russell received a cease and desist letter from Reubens, requesting that the event be canceled. Russell obliged, and now the peeweeoverlouisville.com event page reads simply: "This event has been cancelled. Paul Reubens a/k/a Pee-wee Herman will not be at the event and has never agreed to be at or endorse this festival. Pee-Wee Over Louisville is not and never was affiliated with Paul Reubens a/k/a Pee-wee Herman."

A similar message went up on the Facebook page and drew over 150 comments.

Russell is a co-creator of the annual "Lebowski Fest" (based on the 1998 film "The Big Lebowski") which started in Louisville in 2002 and has spread around the country. Stars from the film have attended various "Lebowski" events, embracing the film's cult appeal.

The Pee-wee event was to have included a dance-off (in the style of Herman, of course) and a marching band.

In an interview with WFPL Radio's web page, Russell says he went through the proper channels. "I reached out to his office prior to launching the event and stated that I wanted to do it in a way that he was comfortable with," he said.

After receiving no response, he moved forward last December, and in March got a call from Reubens, who put him in touch with his office.

"They stated that they wanted to help me in any way they could," he said. "After working with them for a couple months, it became clear they were going to object. I offered any compromise I could think of including changing the event title, the graphics and offering to set up a licensing/royalty deal and/or donate any proceeds to a charity of their choice."

The cease and desist letter arrived May 21, but Russell remains undaunted.

"I think fans have the right to celebrate what they love and this could have been really great," he said. "I still have hope that maybe down the road we can find a way to make this work.

As there's also bookmark syncing and voice search, Next Browser is theoretically the only client that Android users could want. How well that pastiche works is another matter, but those who've been pining for an all-encompassing browser can give the new app a try at the source link.

Did Obama Forget to Salute?

The president may have forgotten something as he boarded Marine One this morning.

On his way to the U.S. Naval Academy graduation ceremony on Annapolis, Md., President Obama didn't return the salute of the marine standing guard at the door of Marine One, as he climbed the steps to the helicopter cabin.

Obama soon ducked his head out, waved to the pilot, and jaunted back down the stairs to address the marine, shaking his hand. In the short video clip, one can't hear the two men talking, so it's unclear what exactly was said. A faint smile appeared to cross the marine's face as the they exchanged brief words.

Obama jogged back up the steps, still not having saluted.

While this exchange may seem to be a military faux pas-Obama typically salutes as he boards Marine One-presidential salutes aren't a fully closed matter. In a 2009 New York Times op-ed, Smithsonian magazine editor and former marine Carey Winfrey identified them as a recent phenomenon, one that evoked mixed feelings from him:

? whenever I saw a president stepping off a helicopter and bringing hand to brow, my drill instructor's unambiguous words came back to me with much of their original force.

Then there were the salutes themselves, which ranged from halfhearted to jaunty. None of them fulfilled the characteristically succinct prescription that Capt. Jack O'Donnell of the Marine Corps delivered, in 1963, to my platoon of freshly minted second lieutenants at basic school in Quantico, Va.: "Your salute," he pronounced, "must be impeccable ?

Presidents have long been saluted, but they began returning salutes relatively recently. Ronald Reagan was thought to be the first, in 1981.

Reagan, Winfrey wrote, consulted the Marine Corps commandant on whether saluting back was appropriate. Marines themselves are taught not to do so out of uniform, and Winfrey raised the obvious point: Presidents, in suits and ties, aren't wearing uniforms. But as commanders in chief, they're in charge, and according to the advice Reagan got, supersede the protocol.

So while Obama typically does salute, it's not as if he's required to.

HTC Desire 600 announced: quad-core processor, dual-SIM and BlinkFeed

It didn't take long for HTC to go official with the Desire 600. Interestingly, it picks up on several of the new Sense 5 features revealed alongside the HTC One, including its fingertip-baiting BlinkFeed for social network and news updates. BoomSound and the ability to craft video highlights from your photos and clips also make the transition, although apparently not the burst-capture Zoe mode. Hardware-wise, there's a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor, with a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 display (at 960 x 540 resolution), an 8-megapixel primary camera capable of up to 720p video capture and a front-facing 1.6-megapixel shooter. The Desire 600 picks up the same dual front-facing speaker setup of the One, although rather than a global appearance, it's currently headed to Russia, Ukraine and the Middle-East for now, landing early this June in white and black options. However, we've already spotted a China-bound version for China Unicom's WCDMA network, the Desire 606w, and if we're honest, we'd probably be happier to see the rumored M4 make an official showing. Now, where's that Desire 200?
