(AP) ? Al-Qaida's leader said the military coup that ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi provides proof that Islamic rule cannot be established through democracy and urged the Islamist leader's followers to abandon the ballot box in favor of armed resistance.

In a 15-minute audio message posted online late Friday, Ayman al-Zawahri also lashed out at the Egyptian military, the country's secular and liberal elites as well as the Coptic Christian minority, accusing them of conspiring against Morsi solely because he was an Islamist.

Egypt's army ousted Morsi, the country's first democratically elected leader, on July 3 after days of mass protests demanding the president's removal. The coup has divided the nation into rival camps, with an array of liberal and secular Egyptians supporting the military's move and Morsi's supporters and Islamist allies rejecting it.

"We have to admit first that legitimacy does not mean elections and democracy, but legitimacy is the Shariah (Islamic law)... which is above all the constitutions and laws," al-Zawahri said in comments addressed to Morsi's supporters.

He condemned the Brotherhood for having "tried its best to satisfy America and the secularists" by relinquishing "jihad," usually invoked by al-Qaida to mean armed struggle. He also noted that Morsi's government was overthrown despite its acceptance of Egypt's landmark peace treaty with Israel and security agreements with the United States ? both of which Islamic militants sharply oppose.

"You forgot that democracy is the West's monopoly and it is allowed for those who belong to the Islamists to benefit from its fruits only on one condition ? you be a slave for the West's ideology, action, policy and economy," he said.

Al-Qaida and other Islamic extremists roundly reject democracy as a Western-imposed system, and oppose it on the grounds that it puts man's laws above those of God.

Turning to Egypt's military, al-Zawahri, who is Egyptian and grew up in a Cairo suburb, accused the army of being a pawn of U.S. interests.

"The Americanized army, was raised by America's aid, training courses and exercises and their allegiance was bought to fulfill the Americans' orders and protect U.S. interests as well as maintain the security of its foster child, Israel," he said.

He said Egypt's secular camp forgot democracy, elections and the peaceful transfer of power and resorted instead to the "Americanized military to overthrow the Egyptian constitution."

The message's authenticity could not be independently confirmed but was posted on a militant website commonly used by al-Qaida. It was produced by the group's arm, As Sahab.

(AP) ? Missy Franklin made history at the world swimming championships ? and she might not even be the most impressive swimmer on her own team.

The U.S. women's coach gives his vote to Katie Ledecky.

"She's not normal," said Dave Salo, marveling at another world-record performance by the 16-year-old who doesn't even have her driver's license yet.

This much is for sure: The future of the American team is in very good hands with these Golden Girls.

Franklin won her fifth gold medal of the championships with a dominating victory in the 200-meter backstroke Saturday, tying the record for most titles by a woman at the every-other-year world meet.

The 18-year-old Franklin has one event remaining ? the 400 medley relay during the final session Sunday ? and a chance to join Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz and Kristin Otto as the only swimmers to win as many as six golds at the worlds or the Olympics.

"That was awesome," said Franklin, who has already bettered her performance at the London Games, where she won four golds and a bronze.

Ledecky came along next and wrapped up a brilliant meet with her fourth gold medal and second world record, this time in the 800 freestyle.

The youngster really turned it on over the final four laps to win in 8 minutes, 13.86 seconds. Now she can focus on getting that driving permit when she returns home to suburban Washington, D.C.

"I just stayed patient throughout the race," Ledecky said, "and made that move when I knew I had to."

Powering to the finish as though she was in a sprint, not the last of 16 laps, Ledecky took down the mark of 8:14.10 set by Britain's Rebecca Adlington at the 2008 Olympics.

Lotte Friis of Denmark set the early pace but simply couldn't keep up when Ledecky shifted into another gear, a repeat of their race in the 1,500 where the teenager broke the previous world record by more than 6 seconds.

Friis settled for another silver, and New Zealand's Lauren Boyle claimed the bronze ? the same order as the 1,500.

When Ledecky climbed out of the pool, Friis pointed at the youngster and applauded, certainly a worthy gesture toward someone who is unbeaten in swimming's two major competitions.

Ledecky won the 800 free at the London Olympics, her international debut, and went 4 for 4 Barcelona, nearly breaking a world record in the 400 free and leading off the U.S. victory in the 800 free relay.

"I exceeded all the expectations I had going into this meet," Ledecky said.

Franklin matched the record held by Tracy Caulkins of the U.S., who won five times at the 1978 worlds in Berlin, and Libby Trickett of Australia, who did it at her home championships in Melbourne six years ago.

Bouncing back from a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle, Franklin won with a time of 2:04.76. Belinda Hocking of Australia took the silver, more than a body length behind Franklin, while Canada's Hilary Caldwell claimed the bronze.

Franklin said the 200 back is her most painful race, but it didn't show. Midway through, she had already pulled out to a comfortable lead.

Everyone else was chasing the other two spots on the podium.

She was chasing history.

"I couldn't have ever imagined this coming into the meet," Franklin said. "It's nice knowing after London that I was still able to motivate myself, and all that work that I put in this past year has still really been worth it."

Meanwhile, after an epic night of swimming, Ryan Lochte finally ran out of gas on his 29th birthday.

He had the top time coming into the final of the 100 butterfly, but managed only a sixth-place finish. Chad le Clos won the gold, leaving no doubt he is the new king of the fly as long as Michael Phelps stays in retirement. The personable South African touched in 51.06, completing a sweep of the 100 and the 200 in Barcelona.

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary claimed the silver, while Poland's Konrad Czerniak picked up the bronze.

"This one is special to me, because of the lineup," Le Clos said. "Lochte came in, and I think he really wanted to win the race. I think that gave the race extra flavor."

The previous night, Lochte pulled off a stunning triple, winning two gold medals and setting a personal best in the 100 fly semifinals. But he couldn't match it in the final, trailing all the way and finishing in 51.58 ? a tenth of a second slower than the previous day, even though he was better rested.

"I just didn't have it," Lochte said. "I got very short and choppy on my stroke and I just fell apart. But 100 fly, it's the first time swimming it internationally. I'm still learning how to swim that event, but I'm going to keep trying it every year and hopefully I get better."

Brazil's Cesar Cielo won his third straight world title in the 50 free. Despite undergoing surgery on both knees after the Olympics, and not even bothering to enter the 100 free, Cielo showed he's still the man to beat in the furious, foamy dash from one end of the pool to the other. His time was 21.32, edging Russia's Vladimir Morozov by 0.15. The bronze went to George Bovell of Trinidad.

In a star-studded final, Nathan Adrian of the U.S. managed only fourth, reigning Olympic champion Florent Manaudou was fifth, and American Anthony Ervin sixth.

Cielo celebrated wildly, screaming and pumping his fists while straddling a lane rope. Then, as always, the tears flowed freely while the rousing Brazilian anthem played and his country's flag was raised toward the roof of the Palau Sant Jordi.

Jeanette Ottesen Gray of Denmark won gold in the 50 butterfly, a non-Olympic event. She touched in 25.24. China's Lu Ying claimed the silver, while the bronze went to Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands. American Dana Vollmer finished last in the eight-woman field.

Another 16-year-old, Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, broke a world record that was set only hours earlier in the women's 50 breaststroke. In the second semifinal heat, Meilutyte ripped off a time of 29.48, beating the mark set in the morning preliminaries by Russia's Yuliya Efimova.

Efimova was swimming the same heat as the teenager and touched second in 29.88, just off the mark of 29.78 she held for not even a day. She had broken the previous record set by American Jessica Hardy in 2009 at the height of the rubberized suit era, 29.80.

The 50 breaststroke is another event not on the Olympic program. Still, it goes down as the second world record for Meilutyte at these championships. The teenager also set one in the semifinals of the 100 breast before winning gold in the final.

For sure, the kids are all right at these world championships.

Their biggest problem is figuring out how to get home with all those gold medals.

"I'll probably just throw 'em in my swim bag," Franklin quipped, "and carry 'em on."

Honduras president order troops to retake prison

Honduras' president ordered troops to take control of a prison on Saturday, a day after a report claimed that inmates have "internal control" over all of the country's prisons.

President Porfirio Lobo said the military would go into the Penitenciar?a Nacional, or National Penitentiary, following a confrontation there. The Ser Honduras news service reported that three died and 15 were wounded in clashes earlier Saturday.

The news came after the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, in a report Friday, said that all control at Honduras' 24 prisons "has been ceded into the hands of the prisoners themselves."

Due in part to limited staffing, inmates practice "self-government" or "shared government" at the detention facilities -- a system that includes administering punishment, resolving conflicts and distributing and setting food prices, according to the report.

An officer in command at one prison, San Pedro Sula, said that prison authorities "have no power to change anything," according to the multinational organization.

Honduran prisons have been criticized for being overcrowded places with poor conditions. The International Centre for Prison Studies, citing February 2010 figures, has said that the country's prisons were operating at 137.9% of capacity.

The commission report noted that at least two prisons had more than twice as many inmates as they should hold.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says there are no gimmicks to grow the economy ? just difficult steps that require Washington's focus.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama is promoting a plan he says can break through gridlock. He's calling it a grand bargain for the middle class.

Obama says he's willing to work with Republicans to reform the tax code for businesses. That would mean lowering rates but ending many loopholes and deductions.

But Obama says he'll only do it if money generated is used for infrastructure, training and job growth.

In the Republican address, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says Obama's health care law will cost jobs. She wants to change the law to require companies to provide insurance to employees working 40 hours a week, not 30.

New Mexico Lottery has a big win

Net sales of approximately $141.8 million were up almost 6 percent ? or $8 million ? in ?FY 2013, according to New Mexico lottery officials.

The New Mexico Lottery raised $43.7 million for Legislative Lottery Scholarships in Fiscal Year 2013, setting a new record.

?This is a very big win for the students and families of New Mexico,? Dan Salzwedel, chair of the lottery?s board of directors, said in a news release. ?Helping young people acquire more knowledge and greater employment opportunities through a college education enriches all of us.?

New Mexico Lottery CEO Tom Romero said revenues from the past six fiscal years have been the highest in the lottery?s 17-year history.

?Our revenue results are strong,? Romero said in a statement.

Net sales of approximately $141.8 million were up almost 6 percent ? or $8 million ? from the last fiscal year, according to lottery officials. The biggest increase was seen in Powerball sales. Players bought approximately $13 million more in tickets for that game than they did in 2012.

The lottery said having fewer over-the-top jackpots in the Mega Millions game was responsible for a $6.2 million decline in ticket sales for that game.

Overall, prizes in FY 2013 came to $77.1 million. Retailers earned $9.1 million for selling tickets and cashing prizes, according to lottery officials.

The Key to Freedom in Your Business - Global Institute for Travel ...

by Meredith Hill

Woman on beachIt?s simply human nature to want freedom. If you think about it, our ultimate desires almost always boil down to wanting freedom. The desire to be a financial success ? is really about the freedom to do what you want, when you want and how you want. The desire to be healthy ? is really about the freedom to live life without the handcuffs of extra weight, fatigue, chronic pain or worse, a disease or illness. The desire to be in a healthy, loving relationship is really about the freedom to be who you are and still connected to another.

Most of my choices in life have been about maintaining my freedom. My poor mother. She would tell me to do something ? and I might listen. But try to tell me to do it HER way ? I would purposely go out of my way to do it MY way.

HandcuffsFreedom is exactly why I left a high paying, cushy job on Wall Street for which most MBA graduates would have given their left arm. When I was working on Wall Street, I often told people that I had sold my soul to the devil. Sure, I made a lot of money, was widely recognized as an industry expert, had great perks, was wined and dined and for the most part, was very happy. But I had to follow someone else?s orders, stick to someone else?s schedule, and pretend to be passionate about something that I couldn?t care less about. I felt handcuffed and my soul was slowly dying.

So I gave it all up in the name of freedom. Freedom to report to myself. Freedom to make my own schedule. And most important, freedom to pursue my passion?let my soul free.
But I must be honest here:?did I find freedom in entrepreneurship??Not immediately.?In the beginning, I simply traded the handcuffs.?Sure, I got to do things my way and be my own boss, but in order to generate revenues, I had to get clients.?And to get clients, I had to do a lot of things that I wouldn?t normally want to do.?To keep clients, I had to do a lot of things THEIR way and not mine.?Instead of no problems, I just had different problems.

So after years of frustration, lots of ups and downs, and a ton of personal development work, I eventually realized that my freedom has always been there, living within me, not outside of me. It was just that my perception of freedom was gone.?Travel is a great teacher of this lesson.

Travel has an uncanny ability to make all of life?s problems (or handcuffs) go away. People travel to be themselves again; not the roles they play in life. People travel to quiet the noise.?They travel to explore new places, sites, experiences, people, cultures so they can experience our connection to other human beings.?Travel allows us to enjoy the exploration without being attached to the result or outcome.?And that?s exhilarating.

But you don?t need travel to rise above your problems or to enjoy the journey.?It?s not the travel that creates the positive emotions and makes the?negative ones go away.?It?s you.?You just believe the illusion that the travel experience is doing it. So use your lessons from travel in everyday life.?Tap into the power within you to rise above your daily problems.?Use gratitude to tap into your ability to quiet the noise.?Embrace the beauty of who you are no matter what you accomplish.

As a travel entrepreneur ? you also get to GIVE freedom to people, through the act of traveling. Think about it, if we all felt a little more freedom in our daily lives, the world just might be a better place.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Working for yourself is not always easy, but I wouldn?t trade it for the world?or a high paying, cushy job on Wall Street. Today, recognize the freedom (lack of problems) you have.?It?s always been there.?You do it by rising above your frustrations and your fears.?You start by finding gratitude in what you have.?You pay it forward by getting excited about the freedom you get to give to your traveling clients. And slowly, you can make the world a better place.

Most adults 'don't exercise enough'

Most adults in England are risking their health by failing to get enough exercise, research suggests.

A University of Bristol-led study found 80% failed to meet the government target of taking moderate exercise at least 12 times in a four-week period.

Better-off and better-educated adults were most likely to exercise, while the poorer and least educated were most likely to be inactive.

The study analysed exercise data for more than a million adults in England.

It found about 8% of adults who were physically able to walk had not walked for even five minutes continuously during a four-week period, while 46% had not walked for leisure for more than 30 minutes continuously.

Researchers said 88% had not been swimming, 90% had not used a gym and around 20% of people over the age of 16 had done only minimal amounts of physical activity.

Warm weather

They say the findings provide evidence of a direct correlation between an individual's education, household income and local area deprivation and their level of physical activity.

Physical inactivity is the most important modifiable health behaviour for chronic disease?

End Quote Prof Carol Propper

Those with higher socioeconomic status were more physically active and people with a degree only had a 12% chance of being inactive. However, those with no qualifications were three times as likely to not exercise.

Those living in areas with more sports facilities and higher local authority spending on new facilities were also less likely to be inactive.

The study also found warm weather made people more likely to exercise, while rain reduced levels of physical activity.

Carol Propper, professor of economics at the university's Centre for Market and Public Organisation, said: "Physical inactivity is the most important modifiable health behaviour for chronic disease, so knowing who is physically inactive is important for designing cost-effective policy interventions."

She said the findings suggested that "financial as well as cultural barriers need to be overcome to reduce the prevalence of physical inactivity".

The NHS recommends people exercise at moderate intensity for at least two and a half hours every week. This can include cycling, fast walking, hiking and basketball. Experts also recommend muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week to work major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).

Olympic legacy

Tam Fry, spokesman for the National Obesity Forum and honorary chairman of the Child Growth Foundation, said: "No-one should be at all surprised by these woeful statistics."

He blamed successive governments for failing to ensure that the London 2012 Olympics inspired people to participate in grassroots sport.

The Economic and Social Research Council-funded research analysed data from Sport England's annual Active People Surveys, which included details on an individual's gender, education, income and local area deprivation, physical activity levels and local geographical factors such as weather and access to sports facilities and green spaces.

The World Health Organisation estimates physical inactivity causes 1.9 million deaths a year worldwide, including 10% to 16% of breast cancer, colon cases and diabetes cases and about 22% of coronary heart disease cases.

Detroit slashes pay for some police, firefighter unions

By Joseph Lichterman

DETROIT (Reuters) - About 1,200 Detroit police lieutenants and sergeants and about 400 Detroit firefighters will see a 10 percent pay cut in their paychecks on September 16, a spokesman for Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr said on Thursday.

The city informed the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association (LSA) and the Detroit Firefighters Association of the pay cut along with a reduction in benefits on Wednesday.

The Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association's contract was slated to be terminated on July 6, but the city extended the contract for 30 days.

Orr's spokesman, Bill Nowling, said the contract was extended to give new Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who started July 1, "an opportunity to get his feet on the ground."

The firefighter union's contract expired June 30, but the 400 affected firefighters - lieutenants, sergeants and captains - have parity with the Lieutenants and Sergeants Association, so their contract was also subject to the delay.

Nowling said the city notified the unions in June that the cuts would occur once the contracts expired. He said the city will take 30 days to process the changes into its payroll system.

The pay cuts will mean police lieutenants will be paid about $7,000 less and sergeants will earn about $6,000 less, said Mark Young, president of the LSA.

"We understand that the city is in financial distress," Young said. "The past leadership of the city government drove us here, but we were hoping that the hardship wouldn't be so great on the men and women that I represent that haven't had a raise in four and a half years."

Aside from the pay cut, the new contract also makes changes to sick leave accrual, overtime payments and paid time off.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing implemented the same cuts last August for patrol officers and most firefighters. Non-uniformed city employees also took a 10 percent pay cut at that time.

The cuts will save the city $4.5 million annually, Nowling said. The unions hope to meet with the city to discuss the changes, Young said, but Nowling noted the changes are already adopted in the city's fiscal year 2014 budget.

Did Google change its stance on net neutrality? [updated]

Google Fiber Net Neutrality

Now that Google is an ISP, it?s started to act more like one. Wired reports that Google has barred a ?potential??Google Fiber customer from attaching a server to its network, which the customer alleges is in violation of the Federal Communications Commission?s network neutrality guidelines. Google says that barring servers from its network is perfectly in line with reasonable network management practices and that users can run servers over Google Fiber if they get the company?s permission first.

[More from BGR: HTC has become a total disaster]

?Your Google Fiber account is for your use and the reasonable use of your guests,? the company wrote to the Fiber customer.??Unless you have a written agreement with Google Fiber permitting you do so, you should not host any type of server using your Google Fiber connection, use your Google Fiber account to provide a large number of people with Internet access, or use your Google Fiber account to provide commercial services to third parties.?

[More from BGR: Dell?s potential savior, a $100 Android computer the size of a USB stick, now shipping to testers]

The trouble, Wired notes, is that the technical definition of a server means that it doesn?t have to be an expensive computer and can be ?any PC or Mac.? What?s more, the FCC?s net neutrality guidelines say that ISPs cannot bar any ?lawful content, applications, services, or non-harmful devices,? so Google will have to explain how the customer?s server would be harmful to its network in order to be compliant with net neutrality regulations.

UPDATE: Google writes in to say that the ?potential? customer in question cited by the Wired article doesn?t live in a part of Kansas City that can yet get Google Fiber. The company has also passed along the following statement reaffirming its support for net neutrality:

Google is a strong supporter of the open Internet and our stance here hasn?t changed. This is a standard practice of network management, and as we said in our filing, the policy does not prevent legal, noncommercial use of applications such as multi-player gaming, video-conferencing, and home security.

Our "caterpillar Olympics" course

My parents have an old birch tree in their backyard in Western Massachusetts. Each August, we watch a new generation of black-and-white? tussock moth caterpillars make its way down from the tree and toward the side of our house to weave cocoons. Last summer, there were so many of these fluffy creatures that they hung down from the trees on their lines of silk like decorations.

This year, we arrived at my parents? place too early to witness the great migration from birch tree to house siding. But we were lucky enough to find one? caterpillar and catch it. In the past, we?ve kept several of them in pickle jars ? with air holes punched in the lid ? and watched as they wove cocoons and turned into moths, then released them. This year, we?re not here long enough to observe the full lifecycle, so we decided to build the caterpillar its own ?Olympic park,? as my 7-year-old daughter calls it, and observe it climbing around. We used the inside of a box top, and built a slide, a seesaw, a tunnel, a ladder, a jungle gym, a bed and other ?equipment? out of paper. We?ve enjoyed watching the caterpillar?s agility as it makes its way around the course, tossing and waving its head from side to side once it reaches the top of a structure, perhaps searching for a higher tree branch to cling on to.?(Warning: Some people are allergic to the hairs on these caterpillars and can develop a rash. We haven?t had this problem, but to stay safe you may want to handle your caterpillars using small sticks or twigs)

Below is a video of our caterpillar on the slide.
